Shiatsu 01Shiatsu is performed through loose clothing on a futon (comfortable floor mat) or on a treatment couch. The reason for this is because the focus of pressure is not on the skin surface, but the underlying structures and the body’s energy (called “ki” in Japan and “chi’’ in China).

In a Shiatsu session the practitioner uses pressure with their thumbs, fingers, palms, and sometimes elbows, knees and feet to induce deep relaxation and a feeling of well-being. It combines dynamic physical manipulation involving pressure on and stretching of the limbs and torso, kneading and releasing tight muscles as well as gentle manipulation to support areas of weakness.

Taka may recommend specific lifestyle or dietary changes. He may also suggest specific exercises to assist with restoring energetic balance. Shiatsu is suitable for all ages and is also safe during pregnancy.
